Inpatient Pediatric & Adolescent/Young Adult Hematology/Oncology- Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant

The University Health in San Antonio servicing patients at the University Hospital Women and Children’s Hospital is recruiting an advanced practice provider (physician assistant or nurse practitioner) to join the Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology.

Position Summary:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides comprehensive, family-centered care to pediatric and adolescent/young adult (AYA) patients with hematologic and oncologic conditions in the inpatient setting. The APP would work collaboratively with attending physicians, pediatric residents, nurses, pharmacists, and multidisciplinary teams.  The APP would be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing management of patients with complex acute and chronic conditions, including malignancies, blood disorders, and treatment-related complications.

Key Responsibilities:

•        Perform detailed histories and physical examinations for pediatric and AYA hematology/oncology patients upon admission and throughout hospitalization
•        Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized plans of care in collaboration with supervising physicians and the multidisciplinary team
•        Manage acute and chronic conditions including oncologic emergencies, chemotherapy-related toxicities, infections, and complications of hematologic disorders
•        Order, interpret, and act on diagnostic tests including laboratory studies, imaging, and pathology results
•        Prescribe medications, chemotherapy (as credentialed), blood products, and supportive therapies in accordance with institutional protocols
•        Perform procedures as credentialed (e.g., lumbar puncture, bone marrow aspirate/biopsy)
•        Provide patient and family education regarding diagnosis, treatment plans, side effects, and discharge planning
•        Coordinate care across inpatient and outpatient settings to ensure continuity and safe transitions of care
•        Participate in daily rounds, case discussions, and interdisciplinary care planning
•        Respond to urgent and emergent clinical situations, including rapid response events
•        Maintain accurate, timely, and thorough documentation in the electronic medical record
•        Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and protocol development as appropriate
•        Serve as a resource and mentor for nursing staff, trainees, and other healthcare team members

Qualifications:

•        Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program
•        Current licensure as an NP or PA in the state of practice
•        Board certification (e.g., PNP-AC/PC, FNP, or PA-C)
•        DEA license (or eligibility)
•        Pediatric or hematology/oncology experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•        Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills in complex pediatric populations
•        Ability to manage high-acuity patients in a fast-paced inpatient environment
•        Knowledge of pediatric oncology and hematology conditions and treatments
•        Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with patients, families, and team members
•        Commitment to compassionate, patient- and family-centered care
•        Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team

Work Environment:

•        Inpatient hospital setting on weekdays with some holidays as required
•        Exposure to high-acuity, medically complex pediatric and AYA patients

Preferred Qualifications:

•        Prior experience in pediatric hematology/oncology or acute care pediatrics
•        Experience with chemotherapy administration and clinical trials
•        BLS, PALS, and/or ACLS certification as required

Reporting Structure:

•        Reports to the Medical Director of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and/or APP Supervisor
